and still has users across the world, but it has become less popular today because newer systems have improved reliability. The X10 was previously the most popular home automation system in the U.S. On the other hand, the fact that it is compatible with the X10 product range means that Insteon has arguably the largest range of compatible devices of any system on the market.

This does mean, however, that all Insteon devices are guaranteed to play nicely with all others, which can't always be said of more open systems. Maximum devices per network: 16,777,216īecause Insteon is a proprietary technology rather than an open protocol-meaning that all of its products (apart from controllers) are designed and manufactured by the same company-the range of dedicated products is more limited than some of its competitors.Network: Peer to peer, dual powerline and wireless mesh. The wireless network created by Insteon devices uses the mesh topology-meaning that each message is broadcast to every device, and every device is capable of acting as a 'repeater' to pass on the message until it reaches its eventual destination. Insteon is still primarily a United States-based company, but it is expanding globally and has already launched 30 products in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. This also allows for compatibility with products made for the once popular X10 powerline protocol. The company behind Insteon claim that this dual channel communication makes the technology more reliable than its main wireless-only competitors such as Z-Wave. I can't imagine they will walk away from HomeKit. BUT it' true that the Homekit Hub isn't great. I created some scenes specifically for Homekit that I prefer to use with my phone, and it's nice to be able to fine-tune the lights without getting up. Setup is a bit annoying, I basically had to duplicate a lot of my ISY setup, but now Siri has command over my home as well.

The Pro Hub is new for me, but it works well enough. The Insteon switch/dimmer hardware and phone support has been solid for me, and I've been using it for almost a decade. I have a couple of keypads with custom-etched buttons that look super legit– I love being able to go to bed and tap one button to turn off every light in the common areas of the house, etc. I have scenes to take care of my outdoor lights at night with the sunrise. I use it to program my many keypads and switches with scenes and customized ramp rates. I just outfitted my house with a ton of Insteon hardware- and I use an ISY and Homekit Insteon Pro Hub.
